The Communist Party of China (CPC), sometimes referred to in English as the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), Simplified Chinese: 中国共产党, Traditional Chinese: 中國共產黨. CPC is the founding and ruling political party of the People's Republic of China (PRC). It was founded in 1921 and grew quickly, and by 1949 it had driven the Kuomintang (KMT)'s Nationalist Government from mainland China to Taiwan after the Chinese Civil War, leading to the establishment of the People's Republic of China.

The upper half of the badge is the flag of CPC. The emblem of the Communist Party of China is a stylized version of hammer and sickle. According to Article 53 of the CPC constitution, "the Party emblem and flag are the symbol and sign of the Communist Party of China. There are five embossed Chinese characters "为人民服务" (為人民服務, Serve the people) below the flag. "为人民服务" a political slogan which first appeared on 8 September 1944, originates from the title of a speech by Mao Zedong delivered on that day. Until now, it is still the unofficial motto of CPC.
